Smartphone tips: Not one... but three cameras! Find out what amazing things your phone's lenses can do.
Smartphone tips: Not one... but three cameras! Find out what amazing things your phone's lenses can do.
Optical Zoom and Focal Length
The main reason for including multiple cameras in smartphones is to provide different "views" without sacrificing image quality.
Wide-angle (Main): This is your everyday lens, balanced for most situations.
Ultra-wide: Uses a shorter focal length to fit more landscape or larger groups of people into the frame.
Telephoto: Uses a longer focal length to bring distant objects closer.
Unlike "digital zoom," which simply crops and stretches pixels (resulting in blurry images), switching to a telephoto lens provides true optical zoom, keeping details sharp.
Depth Perception and Bokeh
To create the blurred background effect (Bokeh) seen in portrait mode, the phone needs to understand 3D space. By using two lenses simultaneously—often a main lens and a depth sensor or telephoto lens—the phone's processor compares the slight differences in perspective between them. This allows the software to map what's in the foreground and what should be blurred.
Improved Low Light and Detail
Some setups include a dedicated monochrome (black and white) sensor. Because it doesn't require a color filter, it can capture significantly more light. Then, the phone's "brain" merges the light data from the monochrome sensor with the color data from the main sensor to create a photo that is clearer and less grainy in low light.
Small, dedicated macro lenses allow the camera to focus on objects just a few centimeters away. Standard lenses often struggle to focus at such close distances, so this specialized glass lets you capture the texture of a leaf or the eyes of an insect.
