37-Year-Old School Teacher-Turned-Entrepreneur Is India’s Newest Tech Billionaire

India's newest billionaire is a former classroom teacher who developed an education app that's grown to a valuation of almost $6 billion in about seven years. Byju Raveendran joined the rarefied club after his Think & Learn Pvt scored $150 million (roughly Rs. 1,000 crores) in funding earlier this month. That deal conferred a value of $5.7 billion (roughly Rs. 39,000 crores) on the company in which the founder owns more than 21 percent, people familiar with the matter said. Its closing coincided with the announcement that the company's Byju's app - named after the founder - will team up with Walt Disney Co, and taking its service to American shores by early 2020. The 37-year-old entrepreneur - who has said he wants to do for Indian education what the Mouse House did for entertainment - is taking his biggest step yet geographically and creatively. In his new app, Disney staples from The Lion King's Simba to Frozen's Anna teach math and Engl...

Oppo Showcases ‘Waterfall Screen’ With Curved Edges, Almost No Bezels

Oppo on Monday showcased its new innovation – a ‘Waterfall Screen. It is essentially a display that has almost no bezels and sharp curved edges. The curved edges of Oppo's Waterfall Screen are more pronounced than the curved-edged display seen on Samsung and Huawei flagships. A dummy Oppo phone shown by the company sports a notch-less and almost bezel-less front. The phone has no physical buttons on the sides, and there's no notch or cut-out of any kind for the front camera in the official images shared by the company. Oppo VP, Brian Shen shared the official photos of the new Oppo Waterfall Screen technology. The display is seen to flow over the edges, like a waterfall. Given that this technology has been introduced in the second half of 2019, we could see it integrated in a new Oppo phone sometime early next year or even later year.

"After several months of testing, we've decided to roll out a lower-priced mobile-screen plan in India to complement our existing plans,” Netflix said in a letter to its shareholders. “We believe this plan, which will launch in Q3, will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay TV ARPU is low (below $5). A source in Jordan's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority warned the game "had negative effects on its users, which led to its being officially blocked". The move follows similar bans in Iraq, Nepal, the Indian state of Gujarat and the Indonesian province of Aceh. In May, Chinese tech giant Tencent ceased offering the game, instead directing users to a newly launched and nearly identical programme it created. PUBG is widely popular in Jordan and institutions in the kingdom have issued warnings to employees not to play it. Psychologists in the countr...

Samsung’s New On-Device AI Technology Promises Faster Data Processing, While Using Less Power

In tech products, it's getting harder for manufacturers to distinguish themselves with just hardware alone but with software, there's still massive potential when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning. Google has been relying on this with its Pixel devices for post-processing photos from the smartphones' cameras. However, doing on-device AI processing can be a resource intensive affair, which is where dedicated chips such as Neural Processing Units or NPUs, come into play. Now, Samsung Electronics has announced a new lightweight algorithm for on-device AI processing, which claims to be four times lighter and eight times faster than existing algorithms, which also consumes lesser power. Members of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) made the announcement at a recent computer vision conference. The new technology claims to be able to perform computations around eight times faster than existing 32-bit deep learning data f...

Amazon Stores Alexa Voice Recordings and Transcripts Indefinitely, Shares With Third-Party Skill Developers As Well

Amazon's Alexa is one of the three most popular AI-based voice assistants in the world, and is considered by many to be better than Google Assistant and Apple's Siri. However, it's also the subject of a massive debate on privacy, which has seen new developments surface in the form of a letter in reply to concerns by a US Senator. The letter states that Amazon stores voice recordings and transcripts recorded by Alexa indefinitely, and even shares some of this data with third-party skill developers. United States Senator for Delaware Chris Coons wrote a letter to Jeff Bezos in May, seeking answers on Alexa, according to a report by Cnet. In a reply to his letter, Amazon's vice president of public policy Brian Huseman stated that Amazon stores voice recordings and transcripts of the same indefinitely, and these can only be removed when manually deleted by users. Furthermore, some of these transcripts aren't deleted even if the users has deleted the actual audio r...

Can Game of Thrones Season 8 Deliver a Finale Worthy of the Biggest TV Show?

“Bittersweet.” That's the word that George R.R. Martin has repeatedly used over the years, whenever he's asked to describe the ending to his unfinished series of novels,  A Song of Ice and Fire , which has served as the basis for its hit TV adaptation: Game of Thrones. And going into the eighth and final season of the HBO series — which returns after a gap of 20 months this weekend and then wraps up in just five weeks — that's the biggest clue we have for the ending to Game of Thrones, given the show passed the books a while ago. Martin has been hard at work on the penultimate one,  The Winds of Winter , since Thrones began eight years ago but only a dozen chapters have seen the light of day. In the paraphrased, borrowed words of the famous jab delivered to a younger, less wise Jon Snow: we know nothing, essentially. (For what it's worth, that's on par with the previous two seasons, much of which were also set after the events penned down by Martin.) All we do...

OnePlus 7 Pro Owners Get Spam Notifications Due to Internal Testing Error

A number of OnePlus 7 Pro owners were in for a surprise earlier today when they started receiving weird spam notifications. The first one comprised of a random arrangement of English letters which made no sense, while the second one featured Chinese characters. Although it may sound like a spam attack orchestrated by a malicious party, it has turned out to be an error originating from an internal test at OnePlus. The company has recognised the issue and is currently assessing the cause behind the spam notifications that perplexed the affected OnePlus 7 Pro owners. We have come across multiple reports on Twitter where OnePlus 7 PRO ₹ 48,999  owners shared screenshots of the two spam notifications and expressed concern as to what they might be. One of the Gadgets 360 staffers also received a spam notification on his OnePlus 7 Pro smartphone. While the spam notification with the random English letters doesn't make any sense, the Chinese characters translate to a...
